Submissions Policy

Merlin Unwin Books is happy to receive unsolicited submissions – our list focuses on countryside non-fiction.

We are a global publisher and sell through all major wholesalers, retailers, and online outlets and we have distributors in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. We also sell co-editions and translation rights to publishers in other countries around the world and attend major book fairs including Frankfurt and London.

  1. Non-fiction
We are a trade-publishing house (which means we publish books for general readers which are made available through all channels in the book trade). We are mainly interested in books with a countryside theme such as natural history, herbalism, foraging and countryside sports. We don't publish children’s books.
  1. General submission guidelines
It is an advantage, but not essential, to show that you have published work in magazines, websites or other online publications which are relevant to your area of interest or expertise.

Please email here and include:

  • A brief outline of the work
  • The word count
  • Two or three sample chapters (if you have them) in a Word document and a list of contents
  • Please include your name, email address and contact telephone number

If you are unable to email your book proposal, you can post it to:

Please include an SAE if you wish your manuscript to be returned.

We will respond as quickly as possible but it can take several weeks for our editors to fully review, research and respond to a proposal, depending on the season and number of titles submitted overall.

We welcome experienced and new writers.
